CHALLENGE

There are about 180,000 undocumented immigrants in Santa Clara County. Some are under DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) Protection or TPS (Temporary Protection Status). However, most undocumented immigrants are living their everyday lives in fear of deportation. As “aliens” in this country, they are given a 9-digit alien registration number to identify as non-U.S. citizens. However, with this a 9-digit number comes with stereotypes that hinder the reality of who makes up the undocumented community.

SOLUTION

By creating an interactive exhibition where undocumented immigrants can share their stories through 9 questions, we can (1) help celebrate what has shaped the undocumented community and (2) help break the stereotypes of who makes up the undocumented community.

DELIVERABLE

I decided to create an exhibition because of the in-person interaction offered by this kind of experience. This is an exhibit for undocumented immigrants by undocumented immigrants because their stories are what create a safe space for other voices to be heard. Using the 9-digit number, I developed questions to help guide their storytelling. These questions are up to interpretation and are meant to help us understand their identities and who makes up the undocumented community.

Guests can travel to the wall across and read instructions of the next part of the exhibition. Once inside the Story Room, they can write their answers and hang the finished tiles in any empty space.
